Teaching Vocabulary in EFL Courses

The purpose of the research was to explore whether an explicit focus on vocabulary in the context of EFL courses can have an impact on students’ motivation and perceptions of their English reading ability. The participants were 133 Bar-Ilan students in various levels of undergraduate EFL courses who filled out a questionnaire about the effects of vocabulary instruction on their reading comprehension and skill and motivation. Results showed that students feel that learning vocabulary improved their reading speed and comprehension, as well as their self-efficacy, leading to increased motivation to study English.
