Multicultural and Multilingual Sensitivity in EFL Teaching
Multicultural and Multilingual Sensitivity in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
The multicultural sensitivity project (MCS) was developed in Bar-Ilan University’s (BIU) English as a Foreign Language Unit under the auspice of the Israeli Hope in Academia, a program that aims to create respectful and tolerant meetings and discourse between diverse Israeli groups in the hopes of fostering societal change. Since BIU’s population reflects the diversity of the Israeli society – in language, culture, congregation, nationality, and religion – teachers must meet the challenges posed by this on-campus reality. This project seeks to promote multicultural awareness and sensitivity in the classroom among EFL students through teaching tools that enable discussions on the meaning of texts and generation of oral and written materials in English that reflect different aspects of students’ cultural experiences and understandings of cultural pluralism.
