Motivation in EFL Learning in Higher Education

Since motivation is considered an important factor affecting learners’ success in second language (L2) learning, our research examined how scholars have understood motivation in general and then explored its role in second language learning and EAP in particular. Furthermore, we sought to understand what in particular lies behind our students’ motivation or lack thereof in our EAP courses.  The research project explored what motivates our EAP learners by identifying the salient features underlying motivation in second language learning in the Israeli tertiary student population at Bar Ilan University. We suggest that the particular environment has an important effect on students' motivation. Since there is not a "one size fits all" answer to the motivation conundrum, language teaching professionals should continue to strive to investigate their students’ specific circumstances in order to enhance motivation
