PhD
Academic English for PhD Students
This course is designed for PhD students who are required to develop their academic writing and presentation skills in English. The aim of the course is to help students write about their research clearly, accurately, and in a way that is appropriate for an international academic audience, in preparation for publication in journals and presentations at conferences.
The course enables each student to write about components of their research, such as the introduction, abstract, or discussion. Each student receives individual feedback on the section they have written, and this feedback serves as the basis for a process of improving the text, using content-based and structural principles of academic writing that are appropriate for the topic, the text, and the student’s field of research.
In addition to writing, students practice presenting their research orally, with attention to the structure of the presentation, the use of slides, and the ability to present a research idea clearly and convincingly.
The course is conducted mostly in a synchronous online format. The presentation sessions, which take place during the final weeks of the course, are held in person on campus. Exact dates will be provided by the instructor. It will not be possible to attend the in-person sessions via Zoom.
The course grade is pass/fail. There is no final exam. The grade is based on active participation, submission of assignments throughout the semester, and an oral academic presentation.
