Exemption Criteria 

Who is exempt from the English-as-a-Foreign-Language requirement in the PhD program?

Students who meet the following criteria are exempt from the English-as-a-Foreign-Language requirement.

1. Holders of an academic degree from an accredited higher education institution in a country where the official language is English, but not from the institution's extension in Israel or from an online/distance learning program or a joint program with an institution in Israel.

2. Students who, as part of their Master’s degree studies, passed the English placement exam for the Master’s program administered by the English-as-a-Foreign-Language Unit at Bar-Ilan University and received an exemption score.

3. Students who successfully completed the M2-level English course for Master’s degree students at Bar-Ilan University.

4. Students who began their studies before the 2025–2026 academic year: students who took an English exam in the department where they are studying and received an exemption score. The exemption is subject to the approval of the PhD Committee.
