Registration Guidelines for Graduate English Courses

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Requirement

Graduate students are encouraged to complete their English requirements within their first calendar year of study.

English Placement Test

Graduate students at Bar-Ilan University are placed into EFL courses based on the results of an English placement test administered by the Department of English as a Foreign Language. Information regarding this exam can be found on the department's website. Please note that placement into graduate courses will not be determined by Psychometric or Amirnet exam scores.

Learning Disabilities and Accommodations

Students with learning disabilities must contact the Office of Student Support and Accessibility to determine their eligibility for exam accommodations.

Accommodations will only be granted by the Office of Student Support and Accessibility.

Placement Into MA EFL Courses

Exemptions from or placement into EFL courses are based exclusively on placement test results, which may be one of the following:

M Course (4 weekly hours)

The M course strengthens academic and professional English, providing students with tools for reading academic texts and responding to them in speaking and writing. Delivered in a pleasant, supportive atmosphere, this course will build your confidence in spoken English.

The M course takes place on campus, with four classes held online. Attendance via Zoom is not available for the in-person classes.

M4 Course (4 weekly hours)

The M4 course will significantly improve students’ English proficiency, providing tools for academic and professional contexts. The course focuses on reading high-level texts as a springboard for speaking, writing, and critical thinking.

The M4 course takes place on campus, with four classes held online. Attendance via Zoom is not available for the in-person classes.

Course Level M2 (2 weekly hours)

The M2 course will teach students how to use academic English, rewrite cumbersome sentences, and refine their writing in general. Note that the knowledge and principles gained from this course will help with academic and professional writing in any language.

The M2 course will be conducted primarily via Zoom. Classes involving student presentations (during the final weeks of the course) will be held in person on campus. Exact dates will be provided by the course instructor. Attendance via Zoom is not available for the in-person classes.
