Examination Format and Scoring
Our placement examination consists of two separate sections: a Reading section and a Writing section. Your combined performance on both sections is used to determine whether you qualify for an exemption or which English course is most appropriate for you.
The Reading section is scored automatically by computer, while the Writing section is evaluated independently by two human examiners.
On the day of the examination, the sections are administered in the following order:
Reading Section
One or two reading passages • 15 questions • 90 minutes
In this section, you will read one or two texts and answer 15 multiple-choice reading comprehension questions.
Please note that, in most cases, the order of the questions follows the order in which the information appears in the text.
Writing Section
One writing task (choose one of two topics) • 30 minutes
In this section, you will be asked to write a paragraph of 150–250 words in response to a question or statement.
The topics address current issues and/or academic topics related to students' everyday lives.
In your paragraph, you will be expected to:
- Present a clear main idea, provide supporting arguments, and explain or illustrate your supporting arguments.
- Ensure that your sentences are logically connected, creating a coherent flow of ideas throughout the paragraph.
- Demonstrate a reasonable level of proficiency in vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
Total Examination Time: Two hours
Important
Because this is a placement test, we do not expect you to answer 100% of the questions correctly or to demonstrate perfect grammar in the writing section in order to qualify for an exemption.
