Making aliya in 2002 included not just a move from the United States to Israel but also a career change for Vardit Jacoby. Left behind were family, friends and community along with a career in the health care field. Using her social work skills, Vardit had been Acting Director of Centralized Admissions of a health care network. Those responsibilities included supervising a staff of social workers, nurses, outreach personnel, and a clerical staff in order to process annual admissions of about 1500 – 2000 patients to various programs.
Making aliya, though, “was the best thing that had ever happened to me,” Vardit emphasizes. “Besides fulfilling the tziyoni dream, it opened up new vistas in my professional life.” After completing an MA in Applied Linguistics at Queens College of the City University of NY, Vardit taught English at various levels in Israel. This included teaching at the elementary, junior high and high school levels upon arrival here. Vardit also taught at the technical and academic tracks at two colleges (Hadassah and Jerusalem College of Engineering). Currently, she teaches at the mechina, undergraduate and graduate levels at Hebrew University and Bar Ilan University.
“Seeing how students learn, integrate and internalize skills is my ‘high’. It does not matter if it’s on the basic ABC level or the graduate level. The process and the successful results are what make the difficult task of teaching all worthwhile.”
